Dehydration
Dehydration: When skin lacks water and is less hydrated, it loses its elasticity, tightness, and freshness: it is dehydrated. Dehydrated skin can feel uncomfortable and cause visible signs that can leave you wondering whether you’re looking at dehydration lines or wrinkles.
Dry/ Flaky skin: As we mature, our natural oil production also starts to slow down. This results in drier, flakier skin. Dry skin can also cause an array of other skin conditions: premature ageing, including peeling, redness and sensitivity. These are the signs to look for:
- A dull-looking complexion.
- Dark areas or ‘shadows’ on the face due to constricted blood vessels.
- Dehydration lines. These lines can look like fine lines caused by ageing, but dehydration lines vs wrinkles are caused by different things. Dehydration lines under eyes are particularly common, but these lines will disappear once the skin is rehydrated.
Prevention: Here are some ways to help dry, itchy skin:
- Use oil-based cleanser
- Use moisturizers, like lotions, creams, or ointments, every day.
- Don’t wash your skin with hot water. Piping-hot water can make skin feel even more dehydrated. When washing your face, use lukewarm water instead.
- Take fewer baths or showers and use milder soap. Warm water is less drying than hot water. Don’t add bath oil to your water. It can make the tub too slippery.
- Try using a humidifier, an appliance that adds moisture to a room.
- Limit time in the sun & avoid tanning.
- Using sun protection (wear protective clothing and sunscreen).

FAQs
Dehydrated skin has several contributing causes, rather than a single defining factor. Here are a few factors you should consider:
- Air conditioning, the weather, lack of sleep, not drinking enough water, too hot showers, harsh skincare products, and bypassing a gentle skincare routine can all be contributors to dehydrated skin.
- Inadequate water intake: If your body is dehydrated this will translate through to your skin.
- A compromised skin barrier: If your skin’s natural moisture barrier doesn’t have enough of its natural building blocks (known as ceramides), this can contribute to moisture loss.
Causes: After the age of 25 the skin metabolism slows down, skin can start to lose its radiance, its suppleness and especially its natural bounce. This phenomenon is not only due to skin ageing but is also aggravated by external factors and busy lifestyles.
Fatigue, stress and pollution create an explosive cocktail, which causes skin to become dehydrated and disrupts the skin barrier. As a result, skin’s tone, texture and complexion becomes dull and blurred.
Barrier function is weakened, contributing to a loss of moisture. With this vital function of skin compromised, it is now less able to protect itself against the external factors that accelerate age-induced dryness further.
The metabolic system within each cell slows. Increasingly, skin loses moisture and becomes less elastic. Dry facial skin and wrinkles follow. It is these dual effects becoming apparent on the skin’s surface that show evidence of age-induced dryness.
Genetic predisposition and ethnicity can make a difference to the speed at which a person’s skin ages and the effects of age-induced dryness become apparent.
