Pigmentation-Sunspots/Age spots

Sunspots/Age spots (Lentigines)

Solar lentigo is a harmless patch of darkened skin. It results from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, solar lentigos or lentigines are very common, especially in people over the age of 40 years. Sometimes they are also known as an “old age spot” or “senile freckle”. Colour varies from skin-colored, tan to dark brown or black, and size varies particularly the face or the back of hands. They occur in light and dark skin but tend to be more numerous in fair-skinned individuals. Age spots are small, flat dark areas on the skin. They vary in size and usually appear on areas exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, shoulders and arms. Age spots are also called sunspots, liver spots and solar lentigines.

Age spots signs:

  • Are usually tan to dark brown.
  • Occur on skin that has had the most sun exposure over the years, such as the backs of hands, tops of feet, face, shoulders, and upper back.
  • Range from freckle size to about 1/2 inch (13 millimeters) across.
  • Can group together, making them more noticeable.
