SKIN CONCERNS

SKIN CONSULATION

Why is a skin consultation important?

At Skin Care Laser  Clinics, we offer complimentary skin consultations. Your experienced therapist will gain a deeper understanding of your skin and recommend a course of treatments that are both safe and effective for your skin. Your therapist will not only assess your skin, but also assess your lifestyle and well being as the skin is influenced by so many intrinsic and extrinsic factors on a daily basis. These factors often include genetics, hormones, diet, sun exposure, medication, diet, climate, smoking, skincare and makeup.

BENEFITS OF SKIN CONSULTATION

What is the outcome of skin consultations?

After your complimentary skin consultation, your therapist will have a better understanding of your concerns and goals for your skin. We will discuss a treatment plan and home care products that will be suitable for you. Treatment plans will be tailored  for up to 3 months and then we will re-evaluate your skin and discuss another treatment plan if necessary. Our goal after the consultation is to get you started on treatments and products and make sure your goal has been satisfied.

Why am I experiencing red, irritated or sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin is extremely common, with between 50 – 90% of the population experiencing skin sensitivity at some point in their lives. Those suffering tend to be more reactive to everyday agents, resulting in redness, stinging and irritation of the skin.

In many cases the skin can become sensitised due to environmental and lifestyle factors. In this situation there may be damage that has occurred to the protective barrier of the skin.

However, a small percentage may experience sensitivity due to genetic and immune factors and are usually allergy prone. For these people a simple approach to skin care is ideal.

To reduce sensitivity the skin needs to be strengthened and protected. This will ensure that the skin integrity can gradually be rebuilt.

Different types of pigmentation.

Freckles are the most common type of pigmentation, these dots are the first signs of sun damaged. These develop after repeated exposure to sunlight and are particularly prevalent on those with a fairer complexion. Freckles can also be influenced by genetics.

Solar Lentigines is also referred to liver spots, sun spots, age spots or brown spots. These spots may occur anywhere on the body, which vary in colour from light brown to black.  All spots must be monitored as they may develop into skin cancer or melanoma.

Melasma is pigmentation that is deeper in the skin dermis. It is located on the face as larger tan or brown patches with an indistinct border. It is more common in woman though causes are unknown. They are often triggered by hormonal changes but the condition is made worse with UV exposure, medications, pregnancy and stress.

Hypo Pigmentation is a often a response to injury of the skin and can be the result of burns, acne, friction or aggressive clinical treatments.  Treatments include as chemical peels, microdermabrasions, laser and IPL. This type of pigmentation can improve with time and is treatable with topical products.

WHAT CAUSES ACNE?

Acne develops when the pores of your skin become blocked with oil, dead skin or bacteria. Each pore in our skin is the opening to a follicle which is made up of a hair and a sebaceous gland. Our sebaceous glands release sebum which travels up the hair follicle and out of the pore onto the surface of your skin.  If the follicle is blocked for any reason this can cause a build-up of oil which can result in acne.

MOST COMMON CAUSES:

  • Too much oil is produced by your follicles
  • • Bacteria in the pores
  • • Dead skin build up in the pores
  • • Hormonal changes

Is my skin dry or dehydrated?

Dry skin and dehydrated skin is not the same thing. Despite these two terms being used interchangeably there is a difference between the two and the way in which they are managed will differ also. Dehydrated skin results due to moisture loss, whereas dry skin is caused by a lack of oil. In most cases dehydrated skin is caused by lifestyle factors, however dry skin lacking oil could be due to lifestyle factors but could also be attributed to internal factors such as hormones or genetics.

Lifestyle tips: Eat plenty of foods that are rich in essential fatty acids (such as oily fish, nuts & seeds, avocado) • Avoid excessively hot showers and try not to let the water in the shower run directly over your face for long periods of time • Rely on fresh air ventilation and minimise your use of artificial heating or cooling where possible • If living in a dry climate, invest in a humidifier to add moisture back into the air  Avoid high consumption of caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, energy drinks and soft drinks. Try to alternate intake with caffeine free herbal teas that won’t be as dehydrating to the body Try to limit prepared meals and take away foods as these can be very high in sodium • Drink plenty of water; this is vital for internal hydration

The Different Types of Scarring:

The way skin scars due to a breakout or persistent acne depends on a number of factors including: skin tone, family history of scarring, and of course the severity of your acne. Pigmentary scars (varying shades of brown), too little (white) or redness.  Scars that appear like holes or indents in the skin are the result of a loss of tissue which isn’t replaced once the breakout or acne has healed. These include what are known as box car scars, ice pick scars, and rolling scars. When a scar is raised and feels lumpy, it’s known as a keloid scar. These potentially permanent scars generally require some form of professional treatment.

Why Acne Can Lead to Scarring

Acne, whether it’s a full-blown breakout or a lone pimple, is essentially inflammation beneath the skin. That inflammation—and any further trauma to the skin inflicted by you picking or squeezing any eruptions—can damage skin cells, collagen stores and elastic tissue.
