Different types of pigmentation. Freckles are the most common type of pigmentation, these dots are the first signs of sun damaged. These develop after repeated exposure to sunlight and are particularly prevalent on those with a fairer complexion. Freckles can also be influenced by genetics.

Solar Lentigines is also referred to liver spots, sun spots, age spots or brown spots. These spots may occur anywhere on the body, which vary in colour from light brown to black.  All spots must be monitored as they may develop into skin cancer or melanoma.

Melasma is pigmentation that is deeper in the skin dermis. It is located on the face as larger tan or brown patches with an indistinct border. It is more common in woman though causes are unknown. They are often triggered by hormonal changes but the condition is made worse with UV exposure, medications, pregnancy and stress.

Hypo Pigmentation is a often a response to injury of the skin and can be the result of burns, acne, friction or aggressive clinical treatments.  Treatments include as chemical peels, microdermabrasions, laser and IPL. This type of pigmentation can improve with time and is treatable with topical products.

Why am I experiencing red, irritated or sensitive skin?

General redness, also known as diffuse redness, is characterised by intermittent blushing and flushing that leaves the skin red/pink and often warm to the touch.  It is most prevalent in people with fairer skin types and commonly appears on the nose, forehead, cheeks and chin. In some cases, it can also be seen on the ears, neck and chest.

Rosacea, on the other hand, is a chronic skin condition that can only be diagnosed by a medical professional and differs from general redness in its severity. It can be difficult to recognise as the condition develops gradually over time but is usually characterised by a persistent deep, ruddy redness accompanied by broken capillaries. The condition has a strong hereditary component and while treatment options are limited.

What causes redness?

Redness occurs when blood rushes to the skin and causes capillaries to dilate, resulting in an overall flushed appearance. If left untreated, the delicate capillaries can remain dilated and result in permanent broken capillaries on the skin’s surface (known as telangiectasia or “spider veins”) or chronic redness (such as Rosacea).

While redness can be your skin’s reaction to a range of conditions there are several triggers that should be avoided where possible, including sun exposure, alcohol consumption, hot or spicy food, exertion, stress, chemicals and cosmetics.

What is happening to my skin when I am experiencing congestion and breakouts?

Breakouts can occur due to several factors within the skin:

  • A build-up of dead skin cells
  • A thicker and stickier oil is produced in the skin (due to hormones)
  • Blockage in the pore occurs (due to the thicker oil and dead skin cells)
  • Multiplying bacteria (when the blocked pore cuts of oxygen)
  • Inflammation and swelling
  • Possible infection (if severe)

Possible causes of congestion prone skin: Silicone based make up primers or foundation Spray tans heavily pigmented make up > Oil based products or those containing petroleum jelly Hormones (pregnancy, adolescence) > Nutrient deficiencies (such as zinc and B vitamins) > Stress Poor diet (may exacerbate) > Over exfoliating > Certain medications > Build-up of dead skin cells (retention hyperkeratosis)

The Different Types of Scarring:

The way skin scars due to a breakout or persistent acne depends on a number of factors including: skin tone, family history of scarring, and of course the severity of your acne. Pigmentary scars (varying shades of brown), too little (white) or redness.  Scars that appear like holes or indents in the skin are the result of a loss of tissue which isn’t replaced once the breakout or acne has healed. These include what are known as box car scars, ice pick scars, and rolling scars. When a scar is raised and feels lumpy, it’s known as a keloid scar. These potentially permanent scars generally require some form of professional treatment.

Why Acne Can Lead to Scarring

Acne, whether it’s a full-blown breakout or a lone pimple, is essentially inflammation beneath the skin. That inflammation—and any further trauma to the skin inflicted by you picking or squeezing any eruptions—can damage skin cells, collagen stores and elastic tissue.

How To Treat Acne Scarring

Acne develops when the pores of your skin become blocked with oil, dead skin or bacteria. Each pore in our skin is the opening to a follicle which is made up of a hair and a sebaceous gland. Our sebaceous glands release sebum which travels up the hair follicle and out of the pore onto the surface of your skin.  If the follicle is blocked for any reason this can cause a build-up of oil which can result in acne.

  • Too much oil is produced by your follicles • Bacteria in the pores • Dead skin build up in the pores • Hormonal changes

  • • BLACK HEADS -An open skin pore or hair follicle clogged with oil, dead skin cells and bacteria.

• PUSTULES -Pustules are large tender bumps which have a pink or red base and a defined circular centre, this is filled with whitish or yellowish pus. • WHITE HEADS -Trapped dead skin cells, oil and bacteria within one of the pores. • PAPULES -Papules are when whiteheads or blackheads cause so much irritation that they damage some of the surrounding skin, this damage may lead to inflammation.  • CYSTIC and NODULES -Cysts and Nodule acne is two of the most severe forms of acne they both form deep under the skins surface. • CYSTIC ACNE can look like large red boils that fill with pus and can often burst and may lead to infection. • NODULAR ACNE  (commonly known as blind pimples) remain intact under the skin they are usually very painful and a lot hair der that cysts.

Why is a skin consultation important?

At Skin Care Laser  Clinics, we offer complimentary skin consultations. Your experienced therapist will gain a deeper understanding of your skin and recommend a course of treatments that are both safe and effective for your skin. Your therapist will not only assess your skin, but also assess your lifestyle and well being as the skin is influenced by so many intrinsic and extrinsic factors on a daily basis. These factors often include genetics, hormones, diet, sun exposure, medication, diet, climate, smoking, skincare and makeup.

What is the outcome of skin consultations?

After your complimentary skin consultation, your therapist will have a better understanding of your concerns and goals for your skin. We will discuss a treatment plan and home care products that will be suitable for you. Treatment plans will be tailored  for up to 3 months and then we will re-evaluate your skin and discuss another treatment plan if necessary. Our goal after the consultation is to get you started on treatments and products and make sure your goal has been satisfied.

Is my skin dry or dehydrated?

Dry skin and dehydrated skin is not the same thing. Dehydrated skin results due to moisture loss, whereas dry skin is caused by a lack of oil. In most cases dehydrated skin is caused by lifestyle factors, however dry skin lacking oil could be due to lifestyle factors but could also be attributed to internal factors such as hormones or genetics.

Lifestyle tips: Eat plenty of foods that are rich in essential fatty acids (such as oily fish, nuts & seeds, avocado) • Avoid excessively hot showers  • Rely on fresh air ventilation and minimise your use of artificial heating or cooling where possible • If living in a dry climate, invest in a humidifier to add moisture back into the skin.  • Avoid high consumption of caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, energy drinks and soft drinks. Try to alternate intake with caffeine free herbal teas that won’t be as dehydrating to the body  Try to limit prepared meals and take away foods as these can be very high in sodium • Drink plenty of water; this is vital for internal hydration.

Possible causes of dehydrated and dry skin: • Aging – oil production diminishes slowly with advancing age • Air conditioning or climate  • Hot showers • Poor cleansing (using soap or cleansers that strip the skin leaving it feeling ‘squeaky’ clean) Inadequate moisturisers • Over exfoliating using abrasive scrubs • Astringents (alcohol based wipes or toners) • Diet (high in sodium or caffeine) • Medications or illnesses • Cigarette smoking.  Signs of dry skin: • Itchy skin Rough skin • Flaky or peeling skin • Cracking skin • Redness • Tight feeling skin Especially after showers • Lines and premature ageing. Signs of dehydrated skin: • Taut skin Scaly looking skin • Superficial lines • Premature aging • Shiny skin • Minor blemishes or breakouts.
